In search of a better education and, in turn, a better life, Zdeněk Bakala left Czechoslovakia as a very young man. Crediting his success to his own academic experience at top American universities, Mr. Bakala has been sponsoring a wide variety of causes and projects that were focused on but not limited to intellectual and cultural development. His activities range from schools to an art gallery, from churches to hospitals.
In 2007, when the Zdeněk Bakala Foundation (www.nadacezb.cz/en) was created to better accommodate the diverse requests for financial assistance that he was receiving, education naturally stood out as the most valuable investment of all. With that in mind, the Scholarship program aims to support talented high school students who have performed to an extremely high standard over the course of their studies, and who are pursuing an international education of the highest caliber – but who don’t have the financial resources they need to make it happen.
In 2010, Zdeněk Bakala and his wife Michaela created the Fondation Zdeněk et Michaela Bakala in Geneva, aiming to support Swiss and Czech students in their pursuit of top-quality educations, as well as to participate in various projects focused on education and human rights.
