The founding principle of all the activities of Zdenek and Michaela Bakala is, truly, the courage, which must, according to their belief, always go hand in hand with responsibility.

About Us

In search of a better education and, in turn, a better life, Zdenek Bakala left Czechoslovakia as a very young man. Crediting his success to his own academic experience at top American universities, Mr. Bakala has been sponsoring a wide variety of causes and projects that were focused on but not limited to intellectual and cultural development. His philanthropic activities include amongst others the support of the Vaclav Havel Library in Prague.

In 2007, when the Bakala Foundation in Prague was created to better accommodate the diverse requests for financial assistance that he was receiving, education naturally stood out as the most valuable investment of all. With that in mind, the scholarship program aims to support talented high school and college students from the Czech Republic who have performed to an extremely high standard over the course of their studies, and who are pursuing an international education of the highest calibre – but who don’t have the financial resources they need to make it happen. Over the past eight years, more than ninety Czech students have been supported by the Bakala Foundation in Prague.

In 2011, Zdeněk Bakala and his wife Michaela created the Fondation Zdeněk et Michaela Bakala in Geneva, aiming to extend their support to students studying in Switzerland. The aim is to assist them in their pursuit for top-quality higher education.

The Fondation Zdenek et Michaela Bakala is placed under the supervision of the Swiss Federal Supervisory Authority and is Affiliated Member of SwissFoundations (
