March 2015

We are pleased to present the 2nd FZMB Newsletter

FZMB Newsletter will be issued twice a year. Its main purpose is to inform the readers about developments in our scholarships’ program and to report on news surrounding the students and the program. Contributions from third parties are welcomed.

FZMB 1st Alumni Event

In 2013 and 2014, the FZMB successfully selected in total 18 students to receive grants and study abroad. Some of these scholars have returned and are working or continuing their studies in Switzerland. The returning students had a chance to meet during the first FZMB Alumni Event which took place on January 15, 2015.
The Graduate Institute kindly offered a conference room at the “Maison de la Paix”, its brand new premises in Geneva. Each participant presented the study or research project they were working on during their studies at a top US university.

Law students emphasized that the most interesting and valuable aspect of their stay was the fact that they could attend courses not taught in Switzerland, thereby extending their knowledge of their field. The small number of participants in these classes also allowed for numerous and interesting discussions between professors and students. Academic evaluations were not only based on exams but very often also on papers.

Students in International Relations explained how important it was for them to be at a prestigious university geographically located near important institutions. For example, studying at the Elliott School of George Washington University, so close to the White House, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank gave one of the students a chance to listen to a live speech by the US Secretary of State John Kerry and Mrs Christine Lagarde, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.

It was also a fantastic opportunity to meet students from around the world, making new contacts and friends. For students in sciences, one of the most relevant aspects of their experience was the small working groups and thereby close cooperation between young scientists and their professors. Working in a US laboratory allowed them to consider different and very practical aspects, which were very helpful for their Masters thesis.

We asked our FZMB Alumni how they felt about their visit to a top American university in their quest for professional success. We wanted to know how they were best leveraging this outstanding experience in their search for employment. The majority of scholars agreed that being in such close contact with world-renowned professors and experts had a boosting effect on their own career path.

FZMB Scholars meeting while in the US

Some FZMB scholars attending US universities located close to each other took the opportunity to meet while abroad. For example, Clara Wack (Harvard Law School) met Giedre Lideikyte-Huber, Matthias van den Heuvel, and Anina Dalbert.

FZMB Scholar Cristian Riccio admitted to the Wellcome Trust Programme in Mathematical Genomic and Medicine in Cambridge for a PhD

FZMB Scholar Cristian Riccio is currently studying at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research for his Master project in Bioinformatics thanks to the support of our Foundation.

He has just been admitted to a three-years PhD Programme in Mathematical Genomic and Medicine offered by the University of Cambridge in cooperation with the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. This institute, named after Fred Sanger, the double Nobel Prize-winning biochemist, is known for its strong contribution in completing the Human Genome Project (genome sequencing and mapping). It then extended its activities to include research on human biology and human diseases.

The PhD programme will offer an opportunity for Cristian to work on mathematical and computational sciences, as well as genome-scale and translational medical research.
