We are pleased to present the 3rd FZMB Newsletter

 

FZMB Newsletter will be issued twice a year. Its main purpose is to inform the readers about developments in our scholarships’ program and to report on news surrounding the students and the program. Contributions from third parties are welcomed.


What have FZMB Alumni achieved so far and what are they doing today?

Giedre Lideikyte-Huber received the Swiss IFA Award 2015

Giedre, a PhD scholar in Public Law from the University of Geneva received the International Fiscal Association (IFA) Swiss Award 2015 for the best contribution in fiscal law for her paper “Taxation Without Representation: the Case of Resident Non-Citizens”.

Giedre received various prizes and awards including the Fondation Zdenek et Michaela Bakala scholarship, which allowed her to spend an entire academic year as a visiting researcher at the Harvard Law School and at Berkeley University.

Julia Miklasova works for the Central European Policy Institute in Bratislava

Julia Miklasova

Julia is working as a Project Assistant at the Central European Policy Institute, a regional think-tank based in Bratislava, Slovakia. Her work focuses on projects linked to the European Union Eastern Partnership programme. She recently published an article on “Transnistria: Russia’s bargaining chip in EU’s periphery”.

She will now return to Geneva to start a PhD in International Law at the Graduate Institute in September 2015.

Ondrej Wagner and Ludvik Eger are ready to embark on a diplomat career

The two-year FZMB scholarship allowed Ondrej Wagner to complete a Masters in International Affairs at the Graduate Institute and to spend a semester at the Pekin University, China. After four months and four rounds of interviews he successfully obtained a position as a junior diplomat at the Czech Foreign Ministry of Affairs in Prague. Only three candidates were selected this year to join the Foreign Ministry.

Thanks to the Foundation’s grant, Ludvik also completed a Masters in International Affairs at the Graduate Institute and spent a semester at the Pontifical Catholic University in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is now about to start his professional career in the international relations.

Anina Dalbert uses her study topic for her professional practice

Following her stay at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Anina wrote her Master thesis on the « Corporate Accountability in Supply Chains of Swiss Multinational Enterprises » striving to hold corporations accountable for rights violations in their product supply chain.

She now works for a law firm specialized in civil and insurance liability cases (www.schadenanwaelte.ch) and continues her job as a consultant for the Swiss Committee of UNICEF, reporting for the Child Friendly Communities’ initiative.

Clara Wack is about to start an internship at the Mission of Switzerland to the EU in Brussels

Clara Wack

After studying at the Harvard Law School, Clara completed a bilingual Masters degree in Basel issued by the Universities of Geneva and Basel.

While at Harvard, Clara joined the Harvard Law and International Development Society and participated in the project (“Morethanshelters”), aimed at developing a social business to improve the living conditions of 100,000 people living in a Syrian camp in Jordan in collaboration with involved actors (refugees, UNHCR, other humanitarian agencies, NGOs, Universities, private sector initiatives and donors).

She will soon begin working at the Mission of Switzerland to the EU, promoting Switzerland’s interests within the EU.

Mélisande Nussbaum and David Dubin responsible for the FZMB Alumni

Mélisande Nussbaum, a FZMB Alumni now legal intern at the Swiss law firm Schellenberg Wittmer, was appointed president of Bakala’s Alumni committee. David Dubin, also a FZMB Alumni was recently appointed vice-president of the committee. He is currently a trainee at the law firm Lenz & Staehelin. Together they will strive to manage and develop the Bakala’s alumni network and the link between the scholars and the Foundation through various informal meetings and the annual scholarship event.

In August, the FZMB Alumni organized their first summer dinner in Geneva. This was an occasion for the participants to get to know each other better and to exchange in a relaxed atmosphere.

As a thank-you gift to the Foundation, Nicolas who spent a semester at the Harvard Medical School as an engineer and whose hobby is making videos, kindly collaborated with the Foundation to create a video about some FZMB scholars and board members. You may view the video on our web site.

The foundation has greatly appreciated this initiative and thanks all participants for contributing this common project.
