Pierre Starkov 2015 - report

DURÉE DU SÉJOUR

August 2015 - December 2015

UNIVERSITÉ VISITÉE

  Stanford University

FACULTÉ

As a medical and computer science student, I attended the faculty of Medicine. I also enrolled in a class at the Management of Science and Engineering Faculty.

IMPRESSIONS GÉNÉRALES

Meeting so many enthusiastic people and working on so many opportunistic projects was a wonderful experience. I will always remember the very intense discussions and emotions I had during the stay. The idea of leaving such a place was very hard. Thanks to globalization, I stay very connected to all the awesome people I met and obviously I continue some of the projects from here, in Switzerland.

PRÉPARATION DU SÉJOUR

Stanford and the EPFL are very connected. I started my research adventure by collaborating with a professor at the EPFL. I also read the three best books on machine learning, as it was mostly the topic I was going to work on during my stay at Stanford.

ARRIVÉE

I arrived on a Sunday afternoon. I was so excited to immediately start my research projects that I attended Stanford on the next day.

RECHERCHE DE LOGEMENT

I found my room in a spacious house through Airbnb. I lived 10 minutes door to door from my office, on a bike.

VIE UNIVERSITAIRE

I worked a lot! At some point I was managing six different research projects. I loved it! As classes started, I attend the MS&E 273 course where multiple groups of four students had to develop a venture project. The class was very demanding and I definitely learned a lot.

TEMPS LIBRE ET VIE SOCIALE

As free time, I met my friends on campus or hang out in San Fransisco. I also attended different student clubs. The one I preferred was the App Development Club.

DIVERS

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” Steve Jobs
