The founding principle of all the activities of Zdenek and Michaela Bakala is, truly, the courage, which must, according to their belief, always go hand in hand with responsibility.

Profile

In my second year of studies for my Bachelor at the University of Zurich I changed my minor to public law. This decision had an important influence on my academic path as international law had fascinated me from the very beginning for its enormous potential to help those in need and because of its importance in today’s interconnected and increasingly regulated world.

Besides my studies, my various extracurricular activities and work experience reflect my deep interest in international law. I was particularly motivated by the volunteer work I did in Kenya as well as my work with UNICEF.  I also gained experience working for a Zurich based law firm and an NGO in Boston. I grew increasingly aware of the fact that particularly women and children still lack knowledge and are deprived of basic rights. This is one of the many reasons why I am inspired to deepen my knowledge and gain more practical experience to support these people. This assessment has lead to an ever-growing dedication to learning more about this multifaceted field. My core interests are women’s and children’s rights, disarmament and the law in armed conflict and post-conflict societies, transitional justice, as well as corporate responsibility.

I decided to pursue a master's in international law at the Graduate Institute in Geneva During my first year, I was selected to take part in the Telders International Law Moot Court Competition 2014, where I acquired new skills in legal writing and oral pleading. Our team came in third in the overall ranking in The Hague last April.

With the generous support of the Bakala Foundation, I now have the unique opportunity to go on an exchange semester to the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. I am extremely grateful for this new challenging opportunity.
