The founding principle of all the activities of Zdenek and Michaela Bakala is, truly, the courage, which must, according to their belief, always go hand in hand with responsibility.

Profile

I have always been interested in understanding the world around me and the best way to satisfy my curiosity was to study science. Therefore, as soon I could, I chose Biology and Chemistry classes during high school supported by a specialization in Physics. However, the field was too vast and I decided to focus on the human body, which lead me to a Bachelor in Life Sciences and Technology at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). I obtained my BSc in 2012 and continued with a Master in Bioengineering with a specialization in Regenerative Medicine.  During my Master, I took the opportunity to participate in different internships in the academic lab and private industry. I spent the first three months (mid-July to mid-October 2013) working for Roche Diagnostics International in Rotkreuz, where I had the chance to apply and be selected for another four-month long internship (June to end-September 2014) at Roche Molecular Systems in Pleasanton, California. Between these two industrial experiences, I could spend two months as an intern in the Laboratory for Regenerative Medicine & Pharmacobiology at the EPFL. These internships provided me with a great overview of the differences between working in academics and private industry. They also allowed me to develop both my practical and theoretical skills.

In order to complete my Master, I am going to do my thesis at the prestigious University of California, Berkeley, where I will work on the analysis of stem cells with the most innovative techniques. This project would not have been possible without the support of the Zdenek and Michaela Bakala Foundation, for which I am sincerely thankful.

During my studies, I also took the opportunity to get involved in different associations where I could work on my soft skills including management and team working. A particularly valuable experience was my time as president of AGEPoly Coaching at the EPFL (2011-2012) and Marketing Director of the Balélec Festival Association (2012-2013), which organizes the biggest annual music festival in Europe with 28 concerts and 15’000 visitors on the EPFL campus. In my free time, I like sports, especially skiing, biking and tennis.
