The founding principle of all the activities of Zdenek and Michaela Bakala is, truly, the courage, which must, according to their belief, always go hand in hand with responsibility.

A strong interest in multidisciplinary, diplomacy, humanitarianism, and conflict mediation has been my primary motivation for pursing a master’s degree in International Affairs at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, and a bachelor’s degree in Political Science at the University of Zurich. While expanding and deepening my academic knowledge, I have always aimed at gaining practical experience in these fields of interest.

The voluntary engagement with young migrants at the Swiss Red Cross, my experiences at a refugee registration centre in Germany, along with my current work at UNHCR have raised my awareness of the impact of global issues on national settings and strengthened my belief in the importance of bi- and multilateral diplomacy. During my internship in the Political, Legal and Press Section of the Swiss Embassy to the United Kingdom, I was able to gain valuable insights into the practicalities of one of the Swiss diplomatic representations abroad and experience first-hand what it means to represent a country, implement its foreign policy and protect its best interests.

With the generous support of the Zdenek and Michaela Bakala Foundation, I will be able to pursue the third semester of my graduate degree at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Boston. The courses offered at Fletcher School will further enrich my academic curriculum, equip me with the necessary practical expertise to shape international events, and provide me with the unique opportunity to establish a global network of connections.
