The founding principle of all the activities of Zdenek and Michaela Bakala is, truly, the courage, which must, according to their belief, always go hand in hand with responsibility.

Growing up deaf was a though challenge, and a blessing. I had a clear objective set from the very beginning of my academic career, to do my best to bring back hearing to those who live in a world of silence.

After having obtained a BSc. in Life Sciences and Technology from EPFL, I decided to dive in a MSc. of Bioengineering and am now performing my Master Thesis in Boston. Thanks to the generous support of the Zdenek and Michaela Bakala Fellowship program, I am completing a 10 months Master Thesis at the Harvard Medical School in the Massachussets Eye and Ear Infirmary.

My project involves the use of optogenetics to build better hearing implants. Today's hearing implants involve electrodes that limit the stimulation resolution, this is because of the nature of the electrical field itself: broad and non-precise. The idea behind the project is to use light instead of electricity. Light can be as precise as a laser beam and therefore we want to confirm the hypothesis that hearing with light will give much better outcomes.
